please answer asapCan I change a 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 from Manual to Automatic? Also how much would cost to switch?I did it on my '71 for only $600 in parts from a Mustang Parts Recycler about 10 years ago. I imagine it'll cost a bit more now. I did the whole changeout in a weekend by myself.
I used a C4, no need for a new drive shaft even for a C6.
Replace front and rear trans seals before you install it.
Same rear mount as the stick will work.
If you get an off year trans, you'll need to change the transmission harness to the year of your car for direct plugin.
Torque converter, I still have an extra one.
Flexplate (pull out the bushing from the crank first), same starter will work if you get the right size flex plate.
Need to run a vacume line to the transmission.
Speedometer gearing still works, no change there.
Check if you have two plugs on the inside/drivers side of the radiator, that's where you trans lines go to. If not, get the right radiator.
Transmission cooling lines to/from radiator.
You'll need to update your carb linkage for a kickdown rod.
Need a shifter for the trans, bolts right up.
I changed the clutch/brake pedal with the single wide brake pedal.
I think that's it.
With some patience, you can gather the parts at a reasonable cost.

Also how much would cost to switch?if you want the car that bad, it would be better just for you to learn stick shift. its not that hard. as someone else said, switching the transmission from manual to auto would hurt the value of the car, and would cost a lot. after you bought the manual one and switched it to auto, you may as just as well bought the auto one.

probably do some interior wireing, because of the neutral safety switch..
if you can find the parts... i would say 1000.00-2000.00 to swap it out...
the four speed manual car is worth more at resale than the automatic, because most of the fourspeed cars were destroyed while racing....so you will lose money when you sell it....

Also how much would cost to switch?The point missed by others here is WHY would you do this to a Classic Mach 1? It is much more valuable when left in original configuration. There are many more Mustangs of that era that are automatics. If you want one with an automatic, keep shopping. Don't destroy the value by altering one. For clarification, the parts are easily available but would run quite a bit for everything which would include the trans, torque converter, flex plate, linkage, cooling lines, crossmember, radiator with cooling connections for trans, and shift handle assembly.
