Trouble Spots

Consumer Guide's庐 Auto Editors have scoured repair bulletins and questioned mechanics to search for commonly occurring problems for a particular vehicle. In some cases we also give possible manufacturer-suggested solutions. In many instances these trouble spots are Technical Service Bulletins posted by the manufacturer, however, we have our own expert looking at additional vehicle problems.

Convertible top: The convertible top may not close due to a problem with one of the microswitches in the lift mechanism. (1999-2000)

Doors: The door may not open from the inside because the cable between the handle and release breaks. (1999-2000)

Engine misfire: The pressure hose between the turbo and intercooler can come loose, causing significant loss of power. (2001)

Fuel gauge: Erroneous fuel-gauge readings and/or problems during refueling may be due to the rubber fuel line inside the tank interfering with the sending unit or filler neck flap. (1999)

Spark plugs: Fouled spark plugs cause hard starting or no-starts, requiring plugs with a hotter heat range. (2001)

Oil change $'s are from my personal experience as an owner of 3 Porsche's in my lifetime. How much does an oil change cost on a 2000 porsche 911?You can do the math, the 911 uses 8.5 liters of oil and Mobil 1 Synthetic is recommended so depending on where you have this done it can range between $100-$125.

One of the issues that was not mentioned here is that there is some concern with the 996 engines when it comes to main seal leaks. While Porsche themselves do not recognize this as an issue, many have claimed to have been bitten by it.

That being said, many people like to jump on the bandwagon and cry wolf for other issues that may comprise the engine.

Overall, very reliable, but also very expensive to fix if you do not take care of it.

Hope this helps!
